A twenty year fuse.

The thinking is twenty years old. The framework is not. We date it honestly, because the honest version is the stronger one. Most frameworks are reverse-dated to look older than they are. This one had a genuine twenty year fuse: old thinking, recent structure.

2006, the yellow legal pads

Scribbles and concepts. The chaos and self-trust thinking in its raw form, before it was a framework and before there were four principles. The questions, not yet the architecture. This is the seed of the thinking.

Reykjavik, the metaphor

A child in Reykjavik, holding paper to his nose against the cold. This is where the napkin image was seeded as a felt thing, long before it meant anything to a business. Reykjavik is the birthplace of the metaphor, and the birthplace of its author. It is not the birthplace of the framework.

2020, London, the fusion

Over a German feast, in one sitting, the twenty years of thinking were drawn into the BOAN structure on the backs of receipt rolls: LIFE, FUEL, TRUTH, JOURNEY, and the bubble glyph. Not the birth of the philosophy. The fusion of philosophy into form. This is the moment the framework crystallised.

Why a napkin

Back of a Napkin is true as a symbol and as a lineage, not as a literal claim that the whole system arrived in one lunch. The symbol carries the meaning: the best ideas get caught on whatever is to hand, in the moment they arrive. The lineage carries the credibility: this was twenty years in the making. Both are assets.
